Group Shot - V1

Added on by John Sturr.

My best group photo in a while - the firm was getting a demonstration from RigidBot, a 3d printer company from Provo, and this is a grab shot.

The serendipitous nature, of the art of image making, has always captivated me, and the BW convert makes the scene even more powerful.

I’m still in love with the files from the V1, and even though I will lust for the A7r, I don’t know if I can remove myself from the V series.

V1 Street

Added on by John Sturr.

I took the train home today - an unusual event as I usually get a ride home or I'm on the bicycle.

Street shooting in Salt Lake is a bit of a challenge - population density is, well, not dense, and the city isn't that urban… ok - so it's hit or miss for street work.

The only way to get good - is to shoot - no matter what the genre, portrait, sports, street -- etc.

I knew I didn't want single point - so I switched to Area AF - and then I wanted constant focusing -- so I set that AFS -- but now as I check out that setting -- I should have set it to AFC.  I've already learned something.  Cool.

So - focusing on this thing is amazing -- it blows the Nex out of the water… this shot was at chest level, shot to my right 10-30mm as I was facing front.  I didn't want to attract attention and loose the scene.  I knew what I wanted to capture - but didn't know what I got - until after the shot.

Developed in Capture NX2 - Portrait with minimal contrast.  I'm finding that Portrait is more than Neutral but less than standard.

400 S.

These are some of my favorites of the walk from the office to the Trax Friday evening.

It's very satisfying to anticipate a shot - adjust camera settings on the fly - and then compose and shoot.

The first "real" images with the Sigma 30mm f2.8 - fov at 45mm - and I love the sharpness.  This lens is a keeper for sure.

Some of this set will be in this years Top Ten.

Good Light or Good Form

Added on by John Sturr.

A colleague asked me when do I usually go out to shoot - "When ever I can", I said.  There are times when I plan a shoot - or have an idea of what kind of look I want.  Other times the moments are serendipitous.

As seen from my most of my work, it is probably not too difficult to see how I am attracted to very, strong, rectilinear forms.  And that is sometimes satisfied thru harsh light and shadow - and I'm really fine with that as the form is what I'm after.    The above image was shot with an Olympus Zuiko 35mm f2.8 Shift - converted with a Leitax Nikon adapter.

This last weekend I shot the Triad Center - and because that area is so vertical and channeled - overhead sun worked out well.  Else - the contrast between the shadow would be too difficult to balance.

Keen Shoe at Outdoor Retailer's Exop

Added on by John Sturr.

At the tail end of yesterday's courthouse shoot I remembered that the Outdoor Retailer's
Expo was in town.

Here are a few around that area.

Keen Shoe had an intereseting outdoor setup - and with the rising sun, and a bit of fill flash, the shirts are a bit compelling.

These are all with the Sony Nex-7 and the 18-55mm Kit.
