Fuji Acros 100 - Film

Added on by John Sturr.

This was shot last Summer on Acros 100 and processed with a "Stand" development.  The stand is not only very convenient - the gradation between whites and blacks is crazy rich, deep and contrasty.  My eye screams for more when all comes out very well.  This scene was with the Rollei 6008 Integral and the kit lens.  When everything comes together / the planets align / film becomes a magical endeavor - even if only you see it as such.  What do I mean by this:  Film needs to be stored to stay fresh - in a fridge; the film is exposed and the image can't be confirmed as being "good"; the film is developed - weird stuff can happen during development; film is then scanned and processed etc.  There are so many steps to where all can really, very easily, go to hell.

But I digress -- this capture turned out great !!

Fuji Acros - 100 iso

Added on by John Sturr.

I've recently discovered this Acros Fuji stock -- and OMG -- it's of my favorite now.  I wish Fuji still made the 400iso as it only comes in 100 stock.  Image was taken on the overlook at Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado.  The weather was cold and crazy windy for a day in September.  But - it all worked out just fine.

JSMB - SLC

Added on by John Sturr.

This is the back side of the Joseph Smith Memorial Building - historically known as Hotel Utah.

This was restored and remodeled, by the LDS Church in the 1980's to become an administration type building.

FFKR Architect's was hired for the original remodel and has since been involved in ongoing modifications.

Umbrella in the Mist

Added on by John Sturr.

I really like photos taken in the rain because it is a venue not very much captured -- and as luck would have it we had days and days of rain falling on a Saturday where I could take advantage to shoot.  As I was driving downtown - and as if it was planned - here was a colorful umbrella traveling the sidewalk on South Temple Street.

As much as I could - I got head enough in the car in order to pull over to take some frames.

The scene really turned out well - as it was a serendipitous event all coming together.  And as much as I hate to say it - photography is all about the Serendipity -- seriously -- If you have the camera you may just come away as being the Rockstar with the one and only image of the event - whatever that may be.

Whale watching in Ektar

Added on by John Sturr.

This is Ektar 100 again -- but with great light of the morning sunrise.  You have to move quickly and sort of guess at everything and hope you get something of it.  And when it all comes together - you wonder if it really was a guess.

This is shot on the Yashica Mat 124G - 120 format.

Backgrounds

Added on by John Sturr.

This is not an award winning photo by any means - but the process of creating it becomes a compelling learning experience.  This composition is an everyday occurrence and being able to recognize value in an everyday experience is sometimes difficult.  The sun peaked in the morning - I saw how intense and golden it was on the SE, or right side of the image, and went out with the P330.  Since it shoots at f1.8 - I knew I wanted the drama of the depth of field the f1.8 could accommodate.  At the same time I wanted to fill the frame and the only way to that was with the Macro mode.

The whole time while shooting I learned to be conscious of the background, because I really had no control of that from my vantage point.  I had to pivot around the subject to get it acceptable.  That - in and of itself, is probably the best lesson in this exercise - and the reason of why I'm discussing it - and that is - Know your Background - that can make or break the image.

Post consisted of a convert to JPG from NRW - an X-Equals Fuji Superia 100 Curve Preset, sharpening, and a slight bump in noise reduction - all completed in LR5.

East High - 100 Years

Added on by John Sturr.

It's so cliche - but golden/blue hour light is always a winner.

East High (yes High School Musical East High) - 100 Year Anniversary graphics to capture - and I broke out the really tall tripod, Manfrotto 161mk2b and the Olympus 35mm f2.8 shift mounted to the D3s.  24mm would have been too wide -- goofy wide - so I went 35mm.  But this shot is with the 85mm - as luck would have it I'm glad I caught this on the post.

I could have arrived a bit earlier for comfort - but 7am was just fine for for the 8am'ish sunrise.

Minimal editing,  just a boost of sharpening, and no cropping.
